The Winston Reid Situation.
By all reports across the internet negotiations have come to end regarding Reids contract. It is highly likely that he will be off to either Man U or Arsenal during the January transfer window, if these reports are to be believed.

The transfer fee will be unrealistically considering he is out of contract in the Summer..Arsenal are certainly in need of a central defender od Reids talent and seem to be the front runner if you believe the media bollox on this.

How about a straight swap. Reid for Jenkinson? It wouldn't solve a central defender dilemma that would exist should Reid leave but it would shore up our right back position for the next five or so years.

Thoughts please?

Here we go again. 'He owes us that much' or 'he owes us for making him what he is'
Absolute fucking bollocks. He is a professional player and like all of them couldn't give a flying fuck what a clubs fans think. They get a better offer they go. The only people who think players 'owe' them anything is other deluded fans

Re: The Winston REID Situation.
Ever thought about that maybe we have already offered Reid what he wants money wise ?

Maybe he just fancies his chances at a bigger club, playing Euro league or Champions League football.
Maybe he fancies the challenge of playing with better players.

If he has his mind and heart set on a bigger club, money won't be the driving force for him.
Either way we will survive without him, it'll obviously take a bit of time to egt a new player in and allow the new guy to settle in, but we'll be fine.

Bad situation this. 3 cb's that have played together for a long period being torn apart by Reids departure ain't good.

All our good work going forward will be undone by a disorganised defence.

Should have paid him what he wanted knowing we have the security of a PROVEN quality CB on our books for the next few years.

At the time I thought the NZ trip was organised in the shadows as part of a Reid deal. Seems not.

Eh??

Re: The Winston REID Situation.
Fair enough. But Reid gained attention as a right back before we signed him, and we know this season that even older players can make the move inside.

I also like Luke Chambers. He used to be a right back, but is looking like a good centre back this season.

Maybe...

There really is no interest at Arsenal in signing Winnie.

There are other clubs interested though

Anyone rate Robertson or Chester at Hull? Dawson at WBA? Richie de Laet at Leicester? Caulker at QPR?

There are some good solid centre backs in the upper reaches of the Championship too if none of these are of interest.

Re: The Winston REID Situation.
I think there's a massive DEARTH of good central defenders anywhere at the moment.

Even managers who know what they're doing and know they need one - like Wenger and Van Gaal - didn't botehr this summer and there's quite simply none around that are any good.

Re: The Winston REID Situation.
No need to focus on just one player. Reid is good, but I wouldn't expect the team to totally collapse if he was to leave.
We thought life was over for the club when Carroll got injured again as apparently he was irreplaceable, look at what happened next with us bringing in Sakho and Valencia.

As has been rightly said on here, there are loads of decent central defenders all over the globe, we just need to scout and develop them.

For once I have complete trust in our board to either nail down a long-term contract for Reid or find a suitable replacement.

Re: The Winston REID Situation.
I will alwasy have huge admiration for Reid whatever he does. He came to this country as a young man and at first found it difficult to adjust to the physical and faced paced action of English football.

His first season he did not look the real deal but that was because he wasn't. But he kept working hard, got his head down and made sure he adapted. And I must admit I have not even before seen such a vast improvement in a player over such a short time. He should be very proud of the player he has become from that naive and unsure young player he once was.

His improvement was then meteoric. Season after season he ahs looked better and better and we always knew this time would come. I am very proud that he and, soon may be 'was' a West Ham player. I have nothing but respect for the guy.

I don't believe he has screwed the club. We have more than had our value for what we paid. This is modern football and these things happen. he has to look after himself and if that means of detriment to the club then so be it. Thousands of players do it.

I don't see any sense in us letting him go in January as for the money we will get it will hardly be worth it. I think he owes us that much to stay for the whole season and do his best to finsih what potentially could be an amazing season. I am sure he will stay for the whole season and I would be sure this arrangement has already been agreed.

As for the future. There are some very good, young centre backs playing in Europe that would love to come to West Ham. And as much as I like Reid I know for a fact we could replace him like for like, if not, with someone even better.

1. As good as he is Winston isn't anywhere near the player Rio was.

2. We sold Rio in 2000, we got relegated in 2003. I'd suggest the two phenomena aren't necessarily linked.

We should not repeat the same mistake again..
